Vikings’ Clive Standen and Lucy Martin Wed in ‘Magical’ French Ceremony

Former Vikings stars Clive Standen and Lucy Martin tied the knot this weekend at an intimate ceremony in Provence, France, after getting engaged last year.

“It felt magical,” Martin, 33, exclusively told Us Weekly of the Saturday, August 31, event. “The sunlight was coming through, it wasn’t too hot. It honestly ended up being perfect.”

Standen, 43, added that “it feels incredible” to be officially married now. “We choose each other every day,” he told Us. “I got to the point where she’s my person and I don’t want to spend an ounce of my life without her anymore, and I will love her as long as I get. This is a celebration of that — nothing really changes for us.”

Standen and Martin both starred on Vikings, which aired on History and later Prime Video from 2013 to 2020. The duo reconnected at a Vikings reunion event in Berlin two years ago, and the rest is history.

For their big day, the pair wanted to make sure nothing felt too stodgy, so they kept the ceremony short and sweet for their 70 guests at Le Castellas in Saint-Victor-la-Coste.

“It was very freeing because we could do what we wanted to do,” Standen explained. “We had a beautiful ribbon-tying ceremony with our vows, my mum read from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. … Alice Martin, my new sister-in-law and an incredible actress, did a beautiful reading from Philip Pullman‘s The Amber Spyglass. And then we had Ben Platt‘s ‘Grow as We Go’ song acoustically, which was just beautiful.”

The newlyweds won’t be jetting off for a honeymoon just yet because they’ve both been so busy with work (Standen recently starred on Apple TV+’s The Morning Show), but they have a location in mind when the time comes. “We kind of have to fly by the seat of our pants!” Martin told Us.

Sharing a Cup
To honor Martin’s Scottish heritage, the couple drank from an antique quaich. “I think usually whiskey is poured in it,” Martin said with a laugh, “but since we were in France, [we had] champagne.”

So in Love
The day after the ceremony, Martin and Standen hosted a post-wedding pool party at the chateau. “It’s been fantastic,” Standen told Us. “I feel like I’m on cloud nine.”

Taking a Dip
“Our first dance was to a very different version of ‘Simply the Best,’ it was an acoustic version,” Standen said. “We had fun with that, we did the Dirty Dancing lift. Lucy’s very first job when she was 17 was in the West End in London in Dirty Dancing, so we paid homage to that.”
Martin added that they’ve been practicing the lift since they first met. “Clive’s amazing at lifting, and I can just do it because when you’re a dancer that’s your job,” she explained. “I trained for such a long time since I was 3 years old, so it’s something that we do for fun quite often.”

A Little Levity
Martin initially forgot to pull her veil over her face when she walked down the aisle on Saturday. “The first thing she said when she got the mic, she was just like, ‘Oh, s–t! I forgot to put the veil on, gonna do it again.’” Standen recalled. “And it just made everyone laugh.”

Blushing Bride
“I’m absolutely in love with my dress,” Martin told Us. “Kyha as a designer really perfects that look of something very simple but also very dramatic. The shapes of her dresses are just stunning and she also manages to make them modern even though they’re classic. She really gets [it].”
