Scroll below to revisit Tatum and Dewan’s ups and downs through the years.
2006
The twosome began dating in 2006 after playing love interests in Step Up. “We were basically together on the movie,” Tatum told Redbook in October 2014. “It’s interesting now because we can watch it and see; we can go, ‘Oh, wow, that was actually our real first kiss.’ As soon as the movie wrapped, we went back to L.A. and were together, and together ever since — never broken up.”
July 2009
Dewan and Tatum got engaged in 2008. They married on July 11, 2009, at a private estate in Malibu.
May 2013
They welcomed their first child, daughter Everly, on May 31, 2013. The Resident alum gave birth in London, where the 21 Jump Street star was filming White House Down.
April 2018
Tatum and Dewan announced their separation after nearly nine years of marriage. Days later, her rep shot down a report that claimed the Foxcatcher star’s drinking led to the split, telling Us: “Happy to clarify that absolutely none of these rumors are true. The situation is as positive as it can be. Nothing negative is going on here. They’re both incredibly mature about this. There’s nothing more really to say.”
October 2018
The Supergirl alum filed for divorce six months later. She requested spousal support, while Tatum asked that her right to spousal support be terminated. They both sought joint custody.
Shortly after their legal battle began, the then-estranged couple reunited for Halloween to go trick-or-treating with Everly. He shared a selfie with Dewan at the time in their respective Genie and Cleopatra costumes. The friendly outing also occurred the same month that news broke of their relationships with Jessie J and Kazee.
February 2019
Tatum claimed in court documents obtained by Us in January 2019 that Everly “appeared to adjust to our separation and living in two homes exceptionally well.” However, an insider told Us the following month that the divorce case had “been challenging and emotional” since the coparents struggled to maintain a set schedule for their daughter.
October 2019
Dewan wrote about her initial reaction to the She’s the Man star’s romance with Jessie J in her book, Gracefully You. “I was learning things about my ex most people wouldn’t have to face — and over the internet, as it was happening,” she recalled. “There I was, on a plane, alone, finding out about his new relationship. I felt blindsided. Choosing grace as I learned everything about my personal situation along with the rest of the world was really difficult.”
November 2019
Tatum explained in court documents obtained by Us that he and the Wedding Year actress had “conflict over adjustments to our schedules to ensure both parties are able to have equal time with our daughter.” He suggested that they work with a coparenting counselor to resolve scheduling issues due to their work commitments.
That same month, the pair were declared legally single.
January 2020
The Vow actor made a dig at Dewan after an Instagram user commented, “Jenna looks better with you,” on a photo of him and Jessie J. “Ain’t no body more stunning and beautiful to look at but even more as a human than Jess. And yeah that includes my ex,” he replied. “Sorry about your opinion. But what i said is facts. Just facts.”
Tatum later clarified his remarks. “And just to be super clear for the other people that love to turn s–t around. Jenna is beautiful and amazing in her own right. But no and i mean no is more beautiful or better than anyone else,” he wrote. “Beauty isn’t measurable. It’s in the eye of the be holder. So while all you infinitely beautiful people pour over these words and try and find s–t to start s–t wit. I’m gonna be enjoying my MF night with my gorgeous lady and cuddle up in her beautiful heart.”
February 2020
Dewan and Tatum agreed to 50/50 joint custody in January 2020 and finalized their divorce the following month. They decided that their daughter would split time with her parents during the week and alternate weekends at their respective houses.
A source told Us in May 2020 that the exes had been “coparenting great and there’s no drama between them.”
Despite finalizing their divorce one year earlier, Us obtained court documents in April 2021 that Tatum’s lawyers filed to request a trial to settle additional details, including child and spousal support, attorneys’ fees and costs and reimbursement/credits.
August 2021
Dewan made headlines when she opened up about taking a then-newborn Everly to Canada with her for work without Tatum. “I had a lot of postpartum anxiety, I would say,” she noted on the “Dear Gabby” podcast. “It was like, I just never stopped. You know, you’re up a couple times in the night and then you’re working all day. I was breast-feeding, I was pumping, I was without a partner — I mean, it was just craziness.”
The former World of Dance host later clarified her comments. “[The quotes] make it appear that I was slamming my daughter’s father, something I would never do,” she wrote via her Instagram Story. “As two working parents, we both faced challenges at the time, but I speak only for myself and not about him. Anyone who actually listens to the interview, something I encourage everyone to do, will clearly see that my words have been distorted for clicks and to push false, salacious gossip with no regard for the actual people involved, or the message intended.”
January 2023
“We fought for it for a really long time, even though we both sort of knew that we had sort of grown apart. I think we told ourselves a story when we were young, and we just kept telling ourselves that story, no matter how blatantly life was telling us that we were so different,” Tatum told Vanity Fair about the end of his marriage to Dewan. “But when you’re actually parents you really understand differences between the two of you. Because it is screaming at you all day long. How you parent differently, how you look at the world, how you go through the world.”
April 2023
The exes were spotted hugging in Los Angeles on a rare joint outing with their daughter, according to pictures obtained by the Daily Mail. Tatum and Dewan were both dressed casually, and the Side Effects actor wrapped his arm around the actress.
April 2024
News broke that Tatum and Dewan were heading to court over their finances, with Dewan asking for an equal division of money Tatum earned from the Magic Mike film series. Dewan’s lawyer, Samantha Spector, claimed that Dewan was entitled to 50 percent of Tatum’s Magic Mike earnings because of shared intellectual property rights and because Tatum allegedly paid for the movies using their shared “marital funds.”
August 2024
Dewan later filed a motion to dismiss Tatum’s legal team in the Magic Mike court battle, citing an alleged conflict of interest. Tatum subsequently accused his ex of creating a “delay tactic to prolong our divorce case” in court documents of his own.
September 2024
Us confirmed that Dewan and Tatum submitted a proposed judgment on September 25, signifying the end of their legal battle over Tatum’s Magic Mike earnings. There is a settlement conference set for October 3, per court documents obtained by Us. Details of the settlement are private, but The Daily Mail reported that the pair agreed to work out any future issues privately with a judge. Dewan and Tatum mutually agreed to waive spousal support, according to the outlet.
